Worship at St. Paul

Worship starts and ends with God.  He gathers us so that we may hear his word – in scripture readings, preaching, music, and sacraments – and call on him in prayer, praise, and thanksgiving.

We don’t think of worship as a “religious ceremony” or a “box that contains God.”  Rather, it is a public expression of our living, personal relationship with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  When the Lord delivers the goods that He wants sinners to have (namely: forgiveness, true life, and salvation) then worship happens… and we end up changed for the better.

st paul lutheran church new braunfels texas hill country worship services

Our 8:00am service is traditional, with time-tested patterns of language from the Bible working on us. We are honest before God about our sin and we receive his forgiveness. We read the Bible, sing hymns, God’s word is preached, and we pray.  The pastor and lay ministers wear robes and the main musical instrument used is the pipe organ.

Our 10:30am service is informal. We are honest before God about our sin and we receive his forgiveness. We read the Bible, sing hymns, God’s word is preached, and we pray.  The pastor and lay ministers wear street clothes and the musical instruments include the piano, the pipe organ, violin, flute and others.

At both services, we have the Lord’s Supper on the first and third Sundays of the month. All baptized persons who believe Jesus’ words “given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins” are welcome to receive the Lord’s Supper.  Baptisms of adults and children normally are done on the second or fourth Sunday of the month.  If you would like to be baptized, please use our contact form (with “baptism” in the subject) or call the church office.

Music is vital for us.  It enhances the proclamation of God’s word and gives us voice to sing his praises. We find it helpful to distinguish between music at the people, for the people, and by the people. We like music by the people the best

:-)

. When it comes to the hymns and songs we select, the following markers to guide our selection:

  1. The lyrics tell a lot about God

  2. The lyrics tell a little about us

  3. The lyrics tell the story of Jesus

  4. The congregation loves to sing it!

This week’s scripture:

Genesis 11:1-9

English Standard Version (ESV)

The Tower of Babel

11 Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. 2 And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. 3 And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” 5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. 6 And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another's speech.” 8 So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused[a] the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth.
